BRAIN DUMP
The ADHD Brain Dump: What It Is and Why It Works
If you've spent any time in ADHD spaces online, you've probably heard people talk about "doing a brain dump." It sounds almost too simple to be useful — write down everything in your head — but for a lot of ADHD brains, it's one of the most genuinely effective tools available.
What it actually is
A brain dump is exactly what it sounds like: sitting down and writing out everything currently occupying your mind — tasks, worries, half-formed ideas, things you're scared you'll forget — with no structure, no order, and no editing. Nothing gets judged or organised at this stage. It just gets out.
Why it works so well for ADHD specifically
ADHD brains often struggle with working memory — holding multiple things in mind at once without a physical anchor. When several tasks, deadlines and half-finished thoughts are all circling at the same time, that mental load itself becomes exhausting and distracting, even before any actual work begins.
This is why people often describe feeling calmer within minutes of a brain dump, even though nothing on the list has actually been done yet. The relief comes from no longer needing to actively hold everything in mind at once.
How to actually do one
- Set a timer for 5-10 minutes — long enough to get everything out, short enough that it doesn't become a task in itself.
- Write in any order — tasks, feelings, random reminders, all mixed together is fine. Organising comes later, if at all.
- Don't edit as you go — the point is speed and volume, not neatness.
- Do it somewhere you'll actually look at again — a notes app, a notebook, or a proper tool, rather than a scrap of paper that gets lost.
When to use one
Brain dumps work well first thing in the morning before the day gets noisy, right before bed when racing thoughts make it hard to switch off, or in the middle of a stressful day when everything feels like too much at once.
